My iPad has stopped responding: what can I do?

Do you suffer from an iPad that no longer responds to touches? A black screen with sound and vibration? Or does the iPad not start at all? Don’t panic, there are several solutions you can try before you slam the iPad against the wall in frustration! In this article we share useful tips to get your iPad working again.

1. iPad stops responding to touch

A frozen iPad can be extremely annoying. The screen is on, the buttons still work, but the iPad no longer responds to touch. In this case, you can try to force restart the iPad. You do this as follows:

  • Models without a home button: Short press the volume up button and short press the volume down button. Then press and hold the power button until the iPad restarts.
  • Home button models: Press and hold the Home button and the top (or side) button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

Please note: a forced restart will not delete your data and a backup is therefore not necessary.

2. iPad screen is black

If the iPad screen is black, but the iPad appears to be on, try the following:

  • Turn on the sound slider on the side of the iPad and turn up the volume.
  • Connect the iPad to the charger and listen for the notification sound. If you hear this, the LCD screen is probably broken. You can solve this by having the screen replaced. Note: the LCD can also be broken without cracks in the screen. It is therefore wise to always go to a professional repairer for a correct diagnosis.

3. iPad won’t start up

If the iPad won’t boot at all, try the following:

  • Plug the iPad into a working charger for an hour (test this first by plugging in another device to make sure it’s not the charger).
  • Also try a different outlet.
